The frock coat became a popular style in the Victorian era. This was more than a coat rather than a suit jacket. It was either single or double breasted with a single vent at the back. These frock coats usually reached till the knees of the wearer. The single breasted style was more common and the double breasted styles were reserved for the special occasions.
Then by the end of the Victorian era, the frock coat split into two elements. The morning coat as we know it retained the tails while the lounge suits which were considered to be less formal lost the tails. Even today the morning suits are considered to be a popular choice for the most formal events in England. The morning suits are more formal than the tuxedos and thus are reserved for the special occasions like royal weddings and state events. Today the morning coats are often worn with the matching pants but at that time wearing them with contrasting pants was a popular look.
The lounge suit was a casual variation of the mens suits that came into existence in the mid 1800s. These were made of heavier fabrics and was mostly used for the outdoor occasions. These were suits that were meant to be worn by the men in British countryside so that they can be comfortable against the cold.
Only with the start of the 20th century, the suits underwent major transition. The shape of the suits retained while the lapel width, jacket length, type of fabrics and more changed. The suits at that time look lot like the ones that we have now. With the progress of the century, the fit of the suits underwent changes. For example, there was a time when the men wore fits of the suits that was meant to hide their body line. But with time they realized that it is much better to wear suits that fell along with their body line.
As for the fabrics, the suits in the early times were made of heavy and coarse fabrics. At that time, heating wasn't the norm and thus people wore heavy clothes even in their homes to counter the cold weather. But with time, the weight of the suit fabrics lessened.
