If you do not know already from epaulettes to chinos most of the mens fashion today has its roots in military. Napoleon Bonaparte though he wrecked havoc all through Europe in the early 19th century changed menswear for better. The styles we have now mostly was due to him and his soldiers. People in the nations regardless of the geography were obsessed with him and his soldiers styles. Nations like Russia, England, France and Prussia were the most affected and we can still see the reminders of that style in our wardrobe.
Mens Russian Overcoats are one such military fashion that the civilians readily accepted. Mens Overcoats were simply long coats that were worn by military soldiers. They were originally designed for military with heavy duty clothes that were used to fight the adverse weather conditions. This were first issued only for the higher rank officers since the newly invented waterproof fabric was expensive. It is said that even the high rank officers had to spend two to three months salary on getting the coat. Soon the material was processed and were issued to all the soldiers fighting in the army especially in the trenches. This is how the trench coat version of overcoats came into existence.
Mens Russian Overcoats were and still is available in two basic styles - single breasted and the double breastedstyles. The single breasted is light than the latter since double breasted styles has extra fabric near the two rows of buttons they have. The double breasted mens overcoats were used by naval officers since they were on sea and had to fight off the cold and rain constantly. The single breasted styles were common among the officers and soldiers in the army.
As for the story of military influence it all started at about 200 years ago. The modern menswear we have now though not the same has the basic structure similar to the military styles of those times. For example if closely observed the suit structure we have now is mostly similar to the dress uniforms of the Napoleon era French and Russian army.
Every countrys style strongly reflected the personality and the climate conditions of the country. For example the French army wore open, single breasted blue and white coat, white breeches or trousers complete with white waistcoat and boots. While for cold weathered Russia had its uniform in dark green, double breasted mens Russian overcoat with standing collar, breeches and trousers and boots for winter and gaiters in summer. This style served the basic model for the three piece and double breasted suits that we have now.
Europe was riddled with wars one after another for a better part of two centuries. This was the time when the tailors and designers in Europe perfected their style of stitching for military garments. Soon after the war ended the styles infiltrated the civilian dress styles. Most of the soldiers who returned from the army opted to stick with the military styles of clothing. Beau Brummell was one such veteran of Tenth Royal Hussars of England who stuck with his military styles and later due to his contemporary fashion sense became one of the most famous pioneer in menswear.
Though England was the one which had the best tailors the Russian and French armies were the greatest influence in the styles. The reason was simple since the armies that were winning at that time was the main satorial influence of the time. The Russian and the French styles are which that carried on to the present from the 19th century.
